Nga Manurere follows Manawa’s journey to reconnect with her son Morehu, who she gave up through whangai.   She is supported by her closest friends Wei, Rina and Jess; all single mothers themselves.   However each secretly harbours their own view on Manawa and the son to whom she is a stranger.

NZ HERALD DEC. 2009 ARTS BEST SECTION by Janet McAllister

‘Nga Manurere’ at Tapac was the surprise jewel of the year for me – emerging playwright Ranae Maihi has wisdom, sensitivity, good pace and a fine sense of humour.  Forget ‘Vintner’s Luck’ and ‘Fashion Week’, this was the best thing Keisha Castle-Hughes was in all year.

THE HOUSE OF BERNRADA ALBA

By Federico Garcia Lorca

Directed by Margaret-Mary Hollins

Cast: Michelle Hine, Nisha Madhan, Liesha Ward Knox, Rachael Nash, Tania Anderson, Yvette Parsons, Rashmi Piliapitaya, Jodie Hillock.

Following the gangland execution of her husband, the formidable matriarch Bernarda Alba will do anything to safeguard her family’s dubious fortune and the future of her five daughters. Five headstrong daughters cooped up in the family home in an emotionally charged atmosphere of bitter rivalry and repressed sexuality make that an epic challenge. This untimely intimate epic encompasses the vital elements of riveting storytelling. It moves with dramatic pace fuelled by characters and relationships where bottled emotions of jealousy, love, laughter and tragedy make for a richly climatic and powerful human drama. One of the most celebrated European dramas of the 20th century; the play was finished by Lorca shortly before he was executed in Spain for his left-wing politics. Faithfully preserving Lorca’s sense of boiling tension and impending tragedy, the play lines up a stunning cast of women who bring this classic text thrillingly up to date.

RAISING THE TITANICS

‘Raising the Titanics’ is a magical showpiece that journeys from the present day, back to the golden age of the Maori show band era to reveal what really sunk the Titanics who were perhaps the greatest Maori show band never to have existed. Somewhere beneath the oceans of music, mirth and memory lies the truth.

AUDITION NOTICE

February 25th, 2010 | Comments Off | Posted in Theatre

After a successful 2009 season, PRAYAS is looking for people who can dance, act or simply light up the stage with their energy for their next theatre production to be staged in the last week of May.

There are two equally important bits in this play:
a) a group of dancers who will form a chorus AND b) two male actors

For Dancers: The auditions will begin at 5 P.M. and we should finish those in under 90 minutes. You do not need to pre prepare any performance. We are looking for people who are comfortable with the idea of contemporary and abstract movement. Also, if you are a dancer who has always wanted to choreograph a group… this could be ur chance!

For Actors: We are looking for 2 male actors to play leads in the acting department. It is STRONGLY RECOMMENDED that if you want to audition for these two parts, you are also present for the movement auditions (as a workshop). Please RSVP to Bhavnesh if you are interested so that we can send you a few pages of the script and a few instructions.

For Performers: If you can play an instrument, sing, specialise in some form of solo dance… we would love to have a chat with you. Come along if you can.
